Voyager 1’s First Earth-and-Moon Photo: The Historic Image Taken on September 18, 1977
Before the famous “Pale Blue Dot,” before the spectacular photographs of Jupiter and Saturn, and only 13 days after leaving Earth, Voyager 1 turned its camera back toward home.
What it captured on September 18, 1977, looked deceptively simple: a small crescent Earth with an even smaller Moon suspended above it against black space.
Yet the photograph represented something that had never been accomplished before.
According to NASA, it was the first spacecraft image to include the entire Earth and Moon together in a single frame.
Voyager 1 was already 7.25 million miles, or 11.66 million kilometers, from Earth when the picture was recorded.
Today, the photograph is far less famous than the Pale Blue Dot image Voyager would make 13 years later.
But this earlier picture deserves another look.
It captured our planet and its natural satellite not as separate astronomical objects, but as a tiny planetary system floating together in space.
And there is an unusual detail hidden in the image: the Moon does not actually appear at its natural brightness.
NASA had to make it brighter.
Voyager Had Barely Started Its Journey
The Voyager program was created to explore the outer solar system during a particularly favorable alignment of the planets.
Voyager 2 launched first, on August 20, 1977.
Despite its name, Voyager 1 launched second, lifting off from Cape Canaveral on September 5, 1977, aboard a Titan-Centaur rocket. Its faster trajectory meant that it would reach Jupiter and Saturn before Voyager 2.
Voyager 1's primary destination was not Earth.
It was heading toward Jupiter, where it would make its closest approach in March 1979, and then toward Saturn in November 1980.
But less than two weeks after launch, controllers used the spacecraft's imaging system to look backward.
On September 18, the spacecraft was millions of miles away.
From there, Earth no longer filled the view.
It had become an astronomical object.
That difference is what makes the photograph so striking.
Earth and the Moon Finally Shared One Spacecraft Frame
Humans had already seen remarkable images of Earth from space before 1977.
Astronauts had photographed Earth from orbit.
The Apollo missions had produced unforgettable views from lunar distance, including the famous “Earthrise” photographed during Apollo 8 in 1968 and the “Blue Marble” image made by Apollo 17 astronauts in 1972.
But Voyager's September 1977 image did something technically distinct.
It placed the entire Earth and the entire Moon in the same spacecraft camera frame.
NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory identify it as the first spacecraft photograph of its kind. Guinness World Records likewise recognizes the September 18, 1977 Voyager image as the first image of Earth and the Moon in a single frame from space.
The image shows Earth as a crescent.
The Moon appears above it and, from Voyager's perspective, was located beyond Earth.
Visible portions of our planet included eastern Asia, the western Pacific Ocean and part of the Arctic.
There is another wonderfully specific detail in NASA's documentation.
At the time the image was taken, Voyager 1 was positioned roughly above Mount Everest, although Everest itself was on Earth's night side and therefore was not visible in the photograph.
The Photograph Isn't Exactly What the Camera Saw
Look carefully at the historic image and both Earth and the Moon are easy to recognize.
That required some processing.
The problem was brightness.
Earth reflects considerably more sunlight toward the camera than the Moon does. If both were reproduced using exactly the same brightness treatment, the Moon would be difficult to see clearly alongside the much brighter Earth.
The final color photograph was assembled from three images taken through color filters and processed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Image Processing Lab.
Then technicians adjusted the Moon.
NASA states that the Moon was artificially brightened by a factor of three relative to Earth so that both objects would appear clearly in the finished print.
That does not make the photograph “fake.”
The positions, shapes and geometry are real.
The brightness relationship was altered for visibility.
It is an early and useful reminder that many scientific space images involve processing. Instruments collect data under conditions very different from ordinary human vision, and scientists frequently process those data so important features can be seen and studied.
Why This Image Feels Different From Apollo's Earth Photographs
Apollo's famous photographs of Earth were made by people.
That matters.
When an astronaut photographed Earth from the vicinity of the Moon, there was still a human observer behind the camera.
Voyager offered another perspective.
It was an unmanned machine already departing for the outer planets.
Earth and Moon appeared together as objects the spacecraft was leaving behind.
The photograph therefore feels less like a view from somewhere humans had reached and more like a family portrait taken by something heading away from us.
The distance was already extraordinary by everyday standards—7.25 million miles.
Yet compared with where Voyager 1 was eventually going, the spacecraft was practically still in Earth's neighborhood.
That contrast would become astonishing over the following decades.
Voyager 1 Was Just Getting Started
The 1977 Earth-Moon portrait was a small early event in a mission that would become one of the most successful in the history of robotic exploration.
Voyager 1 reached Jupiter in 1979.
Its observations contributed to major discoveries about the giant planet and its moons.
It continued to Saturn in 1980 and made a close encounter with Titan, Saturn's largest moon.
That trajectory bent Voyager away from the plane in which most of the planets orbit, ending its opportunity to continue on to Uranus and Neptune. Voyager 2 would eventually make those encounters instead.
Voyager 1, however, had another destination:
outward.
Far beyond the major planets.
Then Came the Photograph Everyone Remembers
On February 14, 1990, Voyager 1 once again turned its cameras toward home.
By then it was roughly 3.7 billion miles from the Sun.
The resulting series became known as the Solar System Family Portrait.
One tiny point in one of those frames was Earth.
That photograph became famous as the Pale Blue Dot, a name inseparably associated with astronomer Carl Sagan and his reflections on Earth's apparent insignificance against the scale of the cosmos.
The Pale Blue Dot became one of the most culturally important space photographs ever made.
Its fame also overshadowed the earlier Voyager portrait.
Yet the two images make an extraordinary pair.
In 1977, Earth and Moon were still recognizable worlds.
In 1990, Earth had become barely more than a pixel.
A Photograph Made Before Digital Photography Became Ordinary
There is another reason the 1977 image is worth reconsidering today.
Modern life has made images from space seem almost routine.
High-resolution satellite imagery is accessible from a phone.
Mars rovers regularly transmit photographs.
Space telescopes produce extraordinarily detailed views of distant galaxies.
In 1977, none of that was ordinary.
Personal computers were only beginning to enter the consumer market.
There was no World Wide Web.
Digital cameras were not everyday consumer devices.
Yet engineers were operating a robotic spacecraft millions of miles from Earth and receiving image data from it across interplanetary space.
The picture itself may look modest by modern standards.
The engineering behind it was anything but.
Why the September 18 Photograph Still Matters
There is a tendency to judge historic space images by visual drama.
By that standard, Voyager's first Earth-Moon portrait faces formidable competition.
Earthrise is more immediately beautiful.
The Blue Marble is more detailed.
The Pale Blue Dot carries greater philosophical weight.
But the September 18, 1977 photograph has its own importance.
It was a change in perspective.
For the first time, a spacecraft far from home could frame the complete Earth-Moon system together.
Our planet was not the background.
The Moon was not a destination filling the camera.
They were simply two worlds sharing a patch of darkness.
The photograph quietly anticipated the perspective that deep-space exploration would make increasingly familiar: Earth is a planet, the Moon is its companion, and together they occupy a very small place in a very large solar system.
September 18, 1977: One Last Look Back Before the Real Journey
Voyager 1 had been traveling for only 13 days when it took the photograph.
Jupiter was still ahead.
Saturn was still ahead.
Its encounters with the outer solar system, its eventual journey into interstellar space and the famous Pale Blue Dot were all in the future.
On September 18, Voyager simply looked back.
From 7.25 million miles away, it captured Earth and the Moon together.
Eastern Asia and the Pacific were visible on the crescent Earth.
The spacecraft happened to be positioned roughly above Mount Everest.
Three filtered exposures were combined to produce the color image.
The Moon had to be brightened threefold so that viewers could see it properly beside Earth.
Those details make the picture interesting.
But what makes it memorable is simpler.
Almost everything humanity had ever built, written, discovered, fought over, purchased, loved or remembered was somewhere on that little crescent.
And beside it was the only other world humans had ever walked on.
For the first time, a spacecraft put both of them into a single frame.
